OOLOGAH — When Sequoyah girls basketball finally found its offensive rhythm Thursday night, the comeback came with urgency and just a little too late.
After spending most of the night searching for answers, the Lady Eagles exploded in the fourth quarter, outscoring Dewey 19-5 and turning the RBC Winter Invitational opener into a one-possession game in the final seconds.
However, the damage had already been done, and Sequoyah’s furious rally ran out of time in a 46-44 loss to the Lady Bulldoggers at Oologah High School.
“They were pushing out on us, and us being so young, our kids haven’t adjusted to the physicality yet,” Sequoyah coach Lee Ott said. “We’re trying to relieve pressure by going east-west instead of north-south, and finally, late in the third when Emmyn [Gibson] had a drive and a kick-out 3 to Laylie [Schiesel], she finally started going north-south. When we start attacking pressure that way, it helps relieve it. Hopefully we can start growing up a little bit.”
The Lady Eagles [4-6] trailed by 16 points entering the fourth quarter after being outscored 25-12 across the second and third periods. That stretch proved decisive, even as Sequoyah nearly completed the comeback behind a late surge led by Kristen Holt.
Holt scored 10 of her game-high 18 points in the final period, igniting the rally with a 3-pointer early in the fourth and continuing to attack from the perimeter and the paint.
The Lady Eagles closed within 45-44 with 7.8 seconds remaining after Lanie Thompson knocked down a pair of free throws, but Dewey’s Adrianna Hicks answered at the line with 2.6 seconds left to seal the win.
The pivotal moment came just before halftime.
With Sequoyah trying to stem the tide late in the second quarter, Cassie Snead buried a buzzer-beater to send the Lady Bulldoggers into the locker room with a 31-19 advantage. The shot capped a dominant middle stretch for Dewey, which used second-chance points and timely shooting to create separation.
The Lady Bulldoggers [6-5] continued to build on that momentum in the third quarter, opening the half with a trio of baskets and pushing the lead to 41-25 by the end of the frame. Matney Epperson and Camrin Jones helped fuel the run, while Dewey capitalized on rebounds and interior looks to maintain control.
The Lady Eagles, however, refused to fold.
Sequoyah opened the fourth quarter on a 7-2 burst, highlighted by Holt’s deep 3-pointer, and gradually chipped away at the deficit. Holt added another 3 with 1:27 remaining between a pair of traditional field goals to make it a 3-point game at the 1:11 mark.
Thompson’s late free throws brought the Lady Eagles within a point, but the Lady Bulldoggers' composure preserved the win. Sequoyah had a chance after Hicks missed her second free throw with 2.6 seconds remaining, but an untimely turnover ended the game.
Holt finished with 18 points and 4 rebounds to lead Sequoyah, while Thompson added 11 points and 2 boards and Emmyn Gibson chipped in 8 and 4. Laylie Schiesel scored 7 points, including a timely third-quarter 3 that helped spark the late push, and pulled down 3 boards.
Dewey’s scoring was balanced, led by Snead’s 10 points and key contributions from Epperson [8], Chanley Herren [7], Jones [7] and Hicks [6]. Hicks and Swan led the team with 6 rebounds apiece.
The Lady Bulldoggers held a slight rebounding edge of 28-24 and matched the Lady Eagles' pressure, as both teams finished with 22 turnovers.
Sequoyah moved into the consolation bracket Friday afternoon and faced Salina in a rematch of the Big Dawg Shoot-Out semifinals, which the Lady Wildcats won 32-25.
In another local result, Oologah defeated Salina 50-26 in the first round and advanced to face Dewey in Friday night’s semifinals.
“I was proud that they fought back and started to look like they’re growing up a little bit,” Ott said. “They started learning, and hopefully that’s a sign of things to come.”
