The Tampa Bay Rays don't need anymore injuries to hit their lineup this season. Rookie star Chandler Simpson almost found himself making a possible trip to the Injured List, but he's going to be fine.
Simpson slid into home plate with Miami Marlins catcher Nick Fortes blocking it in the ninth inning Saturday night on a bang-bang play. Simpson was called out. Cash and the Rays' training staff ran out to check on him. Simpson has been red hot on the road this season, hitting .404 (21-52) in 14 road games.
Tampa Bay won this battle of Florida MLB teams, shutting down the Marlins 4-0 at LoanDepot Park on Saturday in Miami.
After the game, Cash told reporters that Simpson simply had a scratch on his face and was in good spirits. He didn't offer any additional details and it is possible Simpson, who has been playing at a high level for the Rays, might get a day off on Sunday.
On Saturday, though, Tampa Bay starter Drew Rasmussen was in full control. He threw four-hit ball over six innings as he bumped up his season record to 2-4. Yandy Diaz had a dandy day for the Rays, recording two hits and two RBI. Simpson and Jonathan Aranda had two singles and an RBI each in the victory.
Miami starter Sandy Alcantra (2-6), who was the 2022 NL Cy Young Award winner, looked pretty good over the game's first four innings. He retired 11 straight Tampa Bay batters until José Caballero reached on an infield single and Danny Jansen was hit by a pitch in the fifth inning.
