The Tampa Bay Rays clinched the series on the road as they took down the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park for the second straight game in a 3-2 victory.
The Rays pick up their 70th win of the season and now have a winning record on the road following the win. They move to four games ahead of the New York Yankees in the American League East standings and have a five-game winning streak.
Here is what you need to know from the contest.
Kevin Cash in the Rays had the pivot quick after some late changes to the starting rotation on Saturday, as starter Griffin Jax was scratched due to right elbow discomfort. The game quickly turned into a bullpen game, and Casey Legumina got the start.
Seven relievers came out of the bullpen, and almost all were fantastic. Only Cam Boozer and Garrett Cleavinger allowed a run in the contest, including a solo shot homer by Mariners slugger Josh Naylor to make the game interesting in the bottom of the seventh inning. Stephen Matz picked up the win after going two innings and recording two strikeouts. Both Cleavinger and Kevin Kelly each recorded a hold.
The game ended with Bryan Baker picking up his 34th save of the season. As he continues to flirt around the top of Major League Baseball in that stat, he also picked up a record of his own. Baker has picked up 23 straight save conversions, a new franchise record for the ball club.
For the second straight game, Tampa Bay's offense wasn't anything to write home about, but still got the job done. The team picked up seven hits and brought in three runs during the contest, including a home run by Victor Mesa Jr. in the top of the fourth inning against starter George Kirby.
Only Chandler Simpson and Richie Palacios picked up multiple hits in the contest, and the team continued to struggle with runners in scoring position, going 1 for 8 on the game. However, just like Friday's series opener in Seattle, the Rays still found a way to come out victorious.
If Tampa Bay continues to win, there is no reason for concern, but there are certainly some indications that regression could come soon if adjustments aren't made. The trio of Yandy Diaz, Jonathan Aranda, and Junior Caminero went for a combined 1-13 with four strikeouts in Saturday's game.
Other than the late scratch by starter Griffin Jax, the Rays also dealt with a few minor injuries heading into the game on Saturday. Shortstop Taylor Walls was taken out of the order to begin the game with low back tightness. It appears to be a non-issue, however, as he pinch hit later in the game. Regardless, injuries this late in the season, post-trade deadline, are always concerning, and Rays fans might remember the 2023 season where injuries derailed the best team in baseball, the Tampa Bay Rays.
The Rays will look for the sweep tomorrow against the Seattle Mariners and try to pick up their sixth straight win, as Ian Seymour will take the mound for Tampa Bay. He'll face right-handed pitcher Emerson Hancock. First pitch is scheduled for 4:10 p.m. Eastern.
