The Baltimore Ravens are gearing up for the 2026 NFL season, which features plenty of new and returning faces within the organization, including a complete overhaul of the coaching staff. Several players, coaches, and front-office members are crucial to the team’s success this season.

Every day from now until the start of training camp, we’re counting down our 30 Most Important Ravens for the 2026 season. We’ll recap their 2025 season, look ahead to 2026, and tackle the most significant question facing them this year.

Next up is second-year linebacker Teddye Buchanan. Buchanan’s recovery and role matter because the second linebacker spot opposite Roquan Smith remains unsettled. He played a major defensive role before suffering a torn ACL, and his return could affect how much pressure falls on Trenton Simpson and the rest of the linebacker depth. His health will shape the second-level competition.

Background

Position: ILBAge: 23Experience: 2nd NFL season2026 cap hit: $1.23 million

Teddye Buchanan lands at No. 26 on the Ravens’ list of the 30 most important players for 2026 because his recovery and role could help shape the second level of Baltimore’s defense. The Ravens already have Roquan Smith as the centerpiece at inside linebacker, but the second spot remains one of the more important questions entering training camp.

Buchanan looked like a major part of the answer before suffering a torn ACL late in his rookie season. The fourth-round pick from Cal quickly earned defensive responsibility, became a starter early in the year, and gave Baltimore a young linebacker with speed, toughness, and range. His injury changed the short-term outlook, but it did not erase his long-term value.

That is why Buchanan still belongs on this list. Baltimore has a loaded defensive front and one of the NFL’s deepest secondaries, but the Ravens need stability next to Smith. If Buchanan is healthy enough to reclaim a major role, the defense becomes faster, younger, and more complete.

2025 recap

Buchanan’s rookie season ended painfully when he suffered a torn ACL during Baltimore’s Week 15 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. Before the injury, he had emerged as one of the Ravens’ more important young defenders. Reuters reported that Buchanan had become a starting inside linebacker in Week 2, was named NFL Defensive Rookie of the Month for October, and had 91 total tackles, five tackles for loss, one forced fumble, and 0.5 sacks before the Bengals game.

His workload also showed how quickly the coaching staff trusted him. Buchanan played 651 defensive snaps before the injury, giving Baltimore a rookie linebacker who was not simply being eased into sub-packages. He was playing meaningful downs next to Smith and handling a role that required communication, physicality, and coverage awareness.

The injury forced the Ravens to adjust, with Trenton Simpson stepping into a larger role after Buchanan exited. Baltimore’s official site later confirmed that Buchanan’s rookie season was over because of the torn ACL.

2026 outlook

Buchanan’s 2026 outlook depends first on his health. A torn ACL in mid-December creates a difficult timeline for training camp, and the Ravens will have to balance his long-term development with the need to identify their best linebacker pairing before Week 1. Baltimore cannot rush him simply because the depth chart says he belongs next to Smith.

Still, the opportunity is there. The Ravens’ own projected depth chart after free agency listed Buchanan as the No. 2 inside linebacker behind Smith, which shows how highly the organization still views his role if he is physically ready. Trenton Simpson remains part of the conversation after playing 407 defensive snaps and 236 special teams snaps last season, and his camp will matter if Buchanan is limited.

For Buchanan, the goal is to prove he can regain his range, burst, and confidence after the knee injury. His rookie season showed starter-level promise, especially for a Day 3 pick, but his second season will be about recovery, consistency, and trust. If he can return close to full strength, he gives Baltimore a young three-down linebacker who can grow next to one of the NFL’s best defensive leaders.

Biggest question

Can Teddye Buchanan return from his torn ACL quickly enough to win the No. 2 linebacker job?

That is the biggest question entering 2026. Buchanan showed enough as a rookie to be viewed as a future starter, but his timeline will determine how Baltimore handles the position early in the season. If he is ready for camp and regains his movement skills, the Ravens could have their long-term answer next to Smith.

If he needs more time, Simpson and the rest of the linebacker depth will have to keep the position steady. Either way, Buchanan’s recovery is one of Baltimore’s most important defensive storylines because the Ravens’ ceiling changes if he is healthy, confident, and ready to build on a promising rookie season.
