The Texas Rangers are taking a chance on a former top 10 pick.

According to a report from Shawn McFarland of the Dallas Morning News, the AL West club has signed outfielder Jarred Kelenic to a minor league contract.

Kelenic, 26, is a former top prospect with the Seattle Mariners. Just last week, the Chicago White Sox designated the left-handed hitter for assignment after he batted just .226/.305/.321 with one home run and a .626 OPS in 19 games.

"A former sixth overall pick and top prospect, he has often put up huge numbers in the minors without finding success in the majors," Darragh McDonald of MLB Trade Rumors wrote when Kelenic was let go by the White Sox.

"Including this year’s stint with the Sox, he now has 1,547 big league plate appearances. He has been punched out in 30.7% of those and has a .211/.283/.374 line, which leads to an 84 wRC+," McDonald added. "He has stolen some bases but hasn’t received strong grades for his glovework."

For the Rangers, the hope is that Kelenic works out some of his swing-and-miss concerns in the minors.

Many would consider Kelenic a "bust" at this point in his career. Things certainly haven't gone his way. In 426 Major League games, he owns an 84 OPS+, indicating he's been 16% worse than the average replacement-level hitter.
