How bad was it for the Texas Rangers on Memorial Day at Globe Life Field? Sam Haggerty pitched the ninth inning.
Yes, it was that bad as the Houston Astros, behind Tatsuya Imai's six innings, Steven Okert's one inning, and rookie Alimber Santa with two perfect innings, no-hit the Rangers 9-0.
This marked the seventh no-hitter for the Astros in the last eight seasons. It's also the 18th no-hitter in Astros' franchise history. Also, it's the first no-hitter in MLB since 2024.
Rangers starter Kumar Rocker allowed a first-inning run on a sacrifice fly by Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez. Rocker, though, worked five innings and picked up the loss as his record now falls to 2-5 this season. He gave up four hits and four earned runs, walked two, and struck out five.
Rocker also gave up a solo home run to Alvarez, his 16h home run this season. That fourth-inning blast put the Astros up 2-0.
The Rangers were making inroads against Imai in the bottom of the first, but couldn't get a run across. That might have been their best opportunity to get to Imai because he just got stronger as his outing continued.
Then, in the top of the fifth, the Astros played some small ball to add another run. Catcher Christian Vázquez put down a suicide squeeze bunt, and Zach Dezenzo beat the throw from Kumar to catcher Danny Jansen. The Astros were up 3-0 at that point.
Astros shortstop Jeremy Peña then singled to right and Nick Allen scored, extending Houston's lead to 4-0.
Now, Astros first baseman Christian Walker has been on a heater lately. That continued on Monday night as he slammed a three-run home run over the left-field fence. Vázquez and Peña scored ahead of Walker and, well, it was 7-0 Astros in the top of the seventh inning.
Houston added two more runs in the inning as Nick Allen hit a bases-loaded single to left field. Jake Meyers and Cam Smith scored and the Astros were well on their way to their fourth straight victory. The Astros, who have been pretty bad so far this season, have now gone 7-3 in their last 10 games.
As for the Rangers, well, there wasn't a whole lot to write home about on Monday night. Only four Rangers batters reached base, all on walks. Joc Pederson, Alejandro Osuna, Brandon Nimmo twice, and Ezequiel Duran coaxed walks off of Astros pitchers.
It's the fourth consecutive loss for the Rangers, who have gone 3-7 in their last 10 games. They are 24-29 overall, five games under .500 and in third place in the American League West Division. The Astros now are 24-31, one game behind the Rangers and in fourth place in the AL West.
On Tuesday night, the Rangers will get a chance to pick up a hit as the series against the Astros continues at Globe Life Field.
