The New York Rangers continue to reshape their player development department this offseason, reportedly hiring former Blueshirts Jonathan Quick as director of goaltending development and Derick Brassard as a player development assistant Tuesday.
Quick’s hiring was first reported by Mollie Walker of the New York Post, who noted the Rangers made it a priority following his retirement to keep the winningest U.S.-born goalie in NHL history in the organization.
Vince Mercagilano of the Athletic was first on Brassard’s addition. Brassard and Quick will report directly to the Rangers director of player development, Tanner Glass, with Quick overseeing the organization’s goaltending development alongside New York’s goaltending coach Jeff Malcolm.
Quick spent the final three seasons of his 19-year NHL career with the Rangers after first signing a one-year contract with them as a free agent in July 2023. A Connecticut native who grew up rooting for the Blueshirts, he served as Igor Shesterkin’s backup and helped New York win the Presidents’ Trophy in his first season with the club in 2023-24. Over 71 games with the Rangers in three seasons, Quick had a 35-30-6 record, 2.94 goals-against average, .899 save percentage, and seven shutouts before retiring following the 2025-26 season at the age of 40.
Brassard arrived in New York as part of the blockbuster Marian Gaborik trade with the Columbus Blue Jackets in April 2013 and quickly became a key member of the Rangers core. The former center recorded 174 points (69 goals, 105 assists) in 254 regular-season games and added another 44 points in 59 Stanley Cup Playoff games with the Rangers. He helped them reach the Stanley Cup Final in 2014, where the Rangers lost in five games to Quick and the Los Angeles Kings.
After parts of four seasons with the Blueshirts, the fan favorite was dealt to the Ottawa Senators in the July 2016 trade that brought Mika Zibanejad to Broadway.
The additions are the latest changes to the Rangers hockey operations department. Since April, the Rangers promoted Glass to director of player development, hired Jay Leach as head coach of the Hartford Wolf Pack, and brought Kevin Maxwell back as Director of Pro Scouting.
Glass assumed the role after longtime director of player development Jed Ortmeyer left the organization earlier this offseason. Brassard now joining the department as one of the first additions under Glass, his former teammate with the Rangers.
Player development is a crucial area for the Rangers, who’ve worked to build up their prospect pipeline in the past year or so. Forwards Liam Greentree, Cole Beaudoin, and Jacob Battaglia were all acquired by the Rangers over the past five months and turn pro this coming season. And drafted prospects like Alberts Smits and Nathan Aspinall also are set for their rookie pro seasons, making this a crucial time for the player development department.

Quick’s hiring comes after longtime director of goaltending Benoit Allaire retired following 22 seasons with the organization earlier this offseason. Allaire stepped down from being full-time goalie coach in 2024, transitioned into a director of goaltending role while Malcom took over as the NHL goaltending coach. He stayed with the organization through the 2025-26 season before retiring.
The new job reunites Quick with his old friend and goaltending partner, Shesterkin. He’ll also work with veteran Joonas Korpisalo, Shesterkin’s likley backup next season, and help oversee the development of top goalie prospect Dylan Garand.
