A .500 record was snatched away from the Texas Rangers almost as quickly as they achieved it.

The Rangers went into Fenway Park on Friday to open their series against the Boston Red Sox after winning their fourth series in a row and reaching the .500 mark for the first time since May 1.

Against Boston, Texas had a chance to notch a winning record for the first time since April 25, but an ugly showing at Fenway led to a 10-1 bludgeoning by Boston.

After the game, Rangers manager Skip Schumaker reacted to his team’s ugly performance after a strong start and the struggles by starting right-hander Jack Leiter, who went five innings and allowed eight hits, five earned runs, and two walks while striking out three batters.

"Well, the game started out really good," Schumaker told Rangers Sports Network . "I mean, we had a couple hits right out of the gate, scored a run and then came out, you know, feeling pretty good about ourselves. And yeah, the first inning was kind of a sign that it wasn't going to go well, you know, with the first batter walk and then you know, just couldn't find his fastball tonight.

"He ended up spinning the ball more than usual to get him back into counts and to, you know, get through some innings, you know, the second, third and fourth inning were better," Schumaker added. "But just the high pitch count, you know, throughout the game just kind of got him out of there after the fifth inning."

The Rangers took the lead first thanks to an RBI single by Wyatt Langford in the top of the first inning, but Boston’s offense immediately jumped on Leiter in the bottom frame to take a 2-1 lead. By the end of his outing, Leiter had thrown 103 pitches.

Conversely, veteran right-hander Sonny Gray was making things difficult on the Rangers’ batting order, as he went six innings and struck out seven batters while allowing five hits and one earned run to improve to 8-1 on the season.

"Sonny's been a good pitcher for a long time and he came back healthy and everything was working," Schumaker said. "He's always been known to spin the ball, but his fastball command was really good as well.

"You know, kept it down off the barrel for the most part and he did a really, really good job," Schumaker added. "Yeah, a lot of weak contact and you know, but I guess a couple guys had some good swings on him, but for the most part, a lot of balls on the ground and some weak contact and we just couldn't put anything together tonight."

Now at 34-35, the Rangers will look to bounce back from their tough loss on Saturday at 4:10 p.m. ET.
