NFL Hall of Famer Randy Moss has gone from catching passes for a career to catching bass, and his lifelong passion took a step further with the announcement of him being named ambassador of an historic bass fishing tournament.

Moss will headline the inaugural “The Champions” tournament featuring the top professionals from the Bassmaster Elite Series and Major League Fishing’s Bass Pro Tour vying for a record purse of $3.25 million and a first-place prize of $1.25 million, the largest in the sport’s history.

The World Bass Enterprises made the announcement Monday about Moss’ involvement, which includes his new YouTube bass fishing series called “Chasing 10 with Randy Moss” being the presenting partner.

“Bass fishing has always been a big part of my life and fuels my competitive fire in retirement,” said Moss, a four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver. “I get the same rush reeling in a bass as I did finding the end zone.

“As I launch ‘Chasing 10’ and spend more time on the water, partnering with WBE was an easy choice. From day one I’ve been impressed with Brian’s leadership and vision, and I can’t wait for The Champions tournament this fall in Nashville.”

Brian Bird is the WBE founder and CEO, and his historic bass tournament will be Oct. 28-Nov. 1 on Old Hickory Lake in Sanders Ferry Park in Henderson, Tenn. It will feature the top 50 anglers from the top two pro bass tours.

The Champions is a five-day event with three days of competition. Fireworks, a flyover, interactive games, fishing activities and multiple musical acts will highlight the family friendly event.

“Chasing 10 with Randy Moss,” a Big 84 production led by producer Andrew Grein, will chronicle Moss’ love of bass fishing as he travels the U.S. with special guests from the sporting and celebrity world in a quest of catching a 10-pound bass, a legendary milestone of bass fishermen.

The first episode, debuting in the coming weeks, will feature Moss’ former Minnesota Vikings teammates Cris Carter and Jake Reed, along with Bird. Subsequent guests will include former Vikings quarterback Daunte Culpepper, as well as actors, comedians, celebrity chef’s, musicians and more.

“Randy Moss is synonymous with ‘a catch,’ whether on the football field or on the water,” Bird said. “Our partnership with Randy across ‘The Champions’ and his new bass fishing series is a natural fit as we both share a lifelong passion for fishing and a vision to take bass fishing mainstream, showcase the world’s best anglers, and welcome new fans.”

In 14 NFL seasons, Moss made 156 touchdown catches, second only to Hall of Fame wide receiver Jerry Rice (197), and set a single-season record for receiving touchdowns with 23 as a member of the New England Patriots in 2007.

Today, he’s still making catches but in a different venue.
