Despite multiple reports of an agreement in principle between the Diamondbacks and the New York Yankees on a trade that would grant ace Randy Johnson’s request of a move to New York, no deal has been set.
One person involved said there was a better chance than ever that Johnson will be traded, but a source familiar with talks said no paperwork certifying the trade will be sent to the commissioner’s office before Monday.
Trade wrinkles must be worked out, possibly today or Monday.

Indications are the D-Backs are working on parallel talks with other teams and want to have something in place before signing off on the Johnson deal. And the trade with the Yankees could be adjusted to help facilitate another swap.

Reports said the Yankees and Diamondbacks on Thursday agreed to a trade that would send Johnson to New York in exchange for righthander Javier Vazquez, lefty Brad Halsey, minor league catcher Dioner Navarro and about $9 million.

Arizona general partner Ken Kendrick said Thursday that no deal had been reached.

"We’re continuing to work as diligently as we can to come to a final resolution with Randy Johnson and his representatives," Kendrick said, "at a point as close to New Year’s as is possible. We owe it to Randy to have a final decision made."

One feasible second trade would involve Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Shawn Green, who was supposed to come to the D-Backs in the three-team deal the Dodgers backed out of last week.

An industry source said he expected Halsey to eventually be moved to Los Angeles. And Navarro was headed to the Dodgers in last week’s proposed trade. (Arizona is not thought to be high on Navarro as a prospect and seems to be set at catcher with youngsters Koyie Hill and Chris Snyder and veteran Kelly Stinnett as a non-roster invitee.) Another source said a deal had been discussed involving Navarro, Halsey and another player for Green (who makes $16 million in 2005) and about $8 million.

Because the Yankees-Diamondbacks deal would likely include more than $1 million changing hands, and New York presumably wants a 72-hour window next week to negotiate an extension with Johnson, commissioner Bud Selig must approve the trade.

Industry sources see little problem in Johnson’s agreeing to waive his no-trade clause; the Yankees seem prepared to offer Johnson a two-year, $32 million extension that would take him through his 44th birthday in September 2007.

Players involved will also have to take physicals.

Barry Meister, one of Johnson’s agents, declined comment until any deal is official.

One source said Arizona would not necessarily look to retrade Vazquez, but there is interest from other teams, notably Philadelphia (which may offer lefty Randy Wolf) and Baltimore (which needs pitching and has lefty Erik Bedard and outfielders Jay Gibbons and Luis Matos). The Chicago White Sox, Detroit and Texas are teams that could also have interest.

As Arizona was on its way to 111 losses this year, Johnson asked the team to trade him to the Yankees.

But New York could not come up with an attractive package by the July 31 trade deadline.

After the season, Johnson apparently turned down the D-Backs’ extension offers and reiterated his request.

At the winter meetings earlier this month, the team agreed to try to resolve the situation by the end of the year.
