Los Angeles Rams first-round pick Ty Simpson is not expected to play a single snap all season long, barring an extreme blowout, though his exact role is still a mystery.
Simpson is serving as the third-string quarterback throughout the first phase of training camp, sitting behind Matthew Stafford and also Stetson Bennett, the former fourth-round pick.
While he won’t play in the regular season, Sean McVay confirmed that Simpson will play in the preseason, likely getting a ton of run, though Bennett’s status is still unknown, per the head coach.
Stafford is getting regular rest as he tries to limit the wear on his back, leaving a ton of snaps open for the quarterbacks, but so far, Bennet is getting most of them.

The goal, seemingly, is to allow Simpson time to take in all of the entire playbook, which is quite complicated for a rookie, along with learning from the veterans about how to prepare and be an NFL quarterback.
“The Rams built in a practice schedule to allow for loads of backup quarterback reps with Stafford missing two out of every four practices to manage his degenerative back issue. But they have given the wide majority of those extra reps to Stetson Bennett over rookie Ty Simpson,” Atkins reported.
“Thursday was another up-and-down session for Bennett. He threw a pick six to Shaun Dolac when he didn’t see the linebacker hovering in zone and breaking downhill. Bennett has been tripped up for at least one turnover-worthy throw like that per practice. He’s been a risk-taker, which is more tolerable in a practice than a game.
“Bennett had a nice play Thursday where he rolled out under pressure to the right sideline and lofted a ball perfectly in stride to sixth-round rookie receiver CJ Daniels for a first down. Those two plays have been a summary of Bennett’s camp so far.”

The Rams look to have a need for a backup quarterback upgrade, but they are still not going to thrust Simpson into the role, despite believing in his talent enough to take him in the top 15 of this past NFL Draft.
Simpson, to be fair, does not have much in terms of starting experience, only earning his full-time run during 2025.
He is quite raw, all things considered, and the Rams are making the calculation that if Stafford goes down, the season is lost anyway, and they would rather ease Simpson into the starting role down the line.
