The Los Angeles Rams have one of the most talented rosters in the NFL; however, much of that talent comes from veteran players.
As for the team's young core, specifically players under the age of 25, the Rams are relatively thin. That was reflected in ESPN's recent rankings of NFL teams by under-25 talent, where Los Angeles finished dead last.
Aaron Schatz of ESPN noted rookie quarterback Ty Simpson as their blue-chip prospect.
"Perhaps you have heard that the Rams are not as fond of first-round draft picks as other teams? Certainly, trades they have made for veterans contribute to the fact that while Los Angeles has a ton of talent, very little of it is under 25 years old.
"The Rams have only two players currently under 25 who started games last season: safety Kamren Kinchens, who will be 24 at the end of September, and tight end Terrance Ferguson, who is also 23. Another one of the tight ends, second-round rookie Max Klare, just turned 23 on July 8.
"First-round quarterback Simpson will turn 24 in December. The Rams hopeSimpson doesn't get on the field for a couple of seasons because they have someone much older they would rather see under center: reigning MVP Matthew Stafford, who is 38 years old."
The Rams dropped 14 spots in this ranking compared to last season. Schatz named rookie quarterback Ty Simpson as the team's blue-chip prospect.
Los Angeles is a team that does not rely heavily on building through the draft per se, at least with first-round picks. The Rams went seven straight drafts without drafting in the first round, and in the midst of that, they won a Super Bowl.
The Rams have been fortunate to hit on players in the later rounds of the draft like Puka Nacua, Kobie Turner, Kyren Williams, Steve Avila, Quentin Lake and Byron Young, to name a few from the past five drafts.
All were taken in the second round or later.
The selection of Simpson in the first round in this year’s draft was by design. The Rams believe he is the successor to Matthew Stafford whenever he decides to call his career quits.
When that opportunity will come remains unclear, but the Rams' brass is high on Simpson, who is still just 23 years old.
Simpson has some good qualities that could make him a solid signal-caller, at worst, in the league. He is known for his elite field vision, accuracy, and quick processing skills that should translate to the next level.
The Rams will be without their 2027 first-round pick, sending that out in the trade that landed them Myles Garrett. At the moment, they hold their 2028 first-round pick, but no one would be surprised if Les Snead and company trade that pick for an established player.
Los Angeles could get the job done this season, and their offseason moves reflect that in a big way.
