While the Los Angeles Rams don't need to worry about who will start at quarterback in 2026, the team needs to serious considering it's plans in a post-Matthew Stafford world.

Apart from Stetson Bennett, the Rams don't have another quarterback under contract behind Stafford. L.A. could sign a veteran or draft a rookie before the 2026 season, but there is another route: Trade for a backup.

FOX Sports' Ralph Vacchiano offered a hypothetical trade offer that would send 2024 first-round rookie J.J. McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings to the Rams for L.A.'s second-round pick at No. 61.

The Vikings sure look like they’ve moved on from the former 10th overall pick (2024) by signing Kyler Murray. Given Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell’s success rate with QBs, maybe that’s a red flag for the rest of the NFL. But McCarthy is still young and has only 10 games of experience. He could benefit from learning under McVay on a loaded offensive team. And not only do the Rams need to start thinking about who their quarterback will be after 38-year-old Matthew Stafford is done, they have to be prepared if he breaks down this season. Right now their backup is Stetson Bennett. McCarthy would at least be an upgrade over that. And that’s important for an expected Super Bowl contender.

The optics look bad considering McCarthy's numbers in his first year starting in Minnesota, but the idea here is that Rams would get a once-promising prospect with two-to-three years left on his rookie deal (depending on if McCarthy's team picks up the fifth-year option) for a late-second-round pick. That's not an awful price, especially considering how bad the 2026 rookie class is comparatively.

The other element to consider is that the Rams don't have a clear need at any position heading into the trade, except maybe receiver. They can use the No. 13 pick on that position, though, and then use their remaining picks to focus on depth and the future at various positions. McCarthy would be able to sit for at least a year behind Stafford and learn from him and McVay before potentially taking the starting role in the future.

If the Rams were considering drafting a rookie at some point in 2026, McCarthy might be a better option to use that capital than to try and develop a first-year player from the ground floor.
