The Cleveland Browns are now set for a new era of football heading into the 2026 NFL season after the team’s recent trade of star defensive end Myles Garrett this offseason.
Garrett, coming off a year where he broke the single-season sack record, was recently traded to the Los Angeles Rams in a blockbuster deal that included multiple picks and rising star Jared Verse. But despite the struggling organization losing its lifeline on defense, many veterans are optimistic about Verse and the rest of the unit in 2026.
When asked about the Garrett trade on Tuesday afternoon, Browns’ cornerback Tyson Campbell told reporters that he was “surprised” about the trade, but is excited for Verse to join the team this year.
“Probably the same as everyone else felt: surprised,” Campbell stated. “But I knew we were getting a great player in Jared. I’ve seen the body of work that he’s done in such a short time, and it just brings excitement to the defense [when you have] a great player like [Verse].”
Verse, a former first-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft by the Rams, was regarded as one of the best defensive players in his draft class after an impressive stint with the Florida State Seminoles in college. The talented defensive end would proceed to live up to the high expectations during his rookie season, as Verse finished the year with 4.5 sacks and two forced fumbles, which paved the way for him to be named the 2024 Defensive Rookie of the Year.
Following his successful rookie campaign, Verse would continue his dominant stretch into the 2025 season, finishing with 58 tackles, 7.5 sacks, and 3 forced fumbles. This led the Browns to push Rams’ general manager Les Snead to include the 26-year-old in the recent trade for Garrett, as he is now set to replace the former Cleveland legend on defense in 2026.
In addition to his surprise regarding the trade, Campbell also told reporters on Tuesday that he texted Verse to welcome him, along with a simple message: “Let’s bring winning to the city” of Cleveland.
Now, with Garrett out of the mix, Verse is set to become the Browns’ primary pass rusher for the foreseeable future. Verse has proven to be a tremendous defensive end capable of pressuring opposing quarterbacks. This will allow for Cleveland’s rotational EDGE rushers, such as Alex Wright and Isaiah McGuire, to land more opportunities with his presence on the field.
