RELATED PHOTO GALLERY HENDERSON, NEV.—It was quiet enough to hear a tear drop.

The Hawaii women’s basketball team’s remarkable run came to a disheartening end in Saturday’s 60-48 loss to UC San Diego in the championship game of the Big West Tournament at Lee’s Family Forum.

“There’s a level of disappointment that’s very different when you play for a state, ” UH coach Laura Beeman said, her eyes moistened with emotion. “Tough locker room. Love these kids. Super proud of them. We weren’t supposed to be here (in the title game ). But they’re amazing.”

In all likelihood, the Rainbow Wahine will not be invited to the WNIT.

“These tears aren’t because we lost, ” Beeman said. “The tears are because this is the last time this group gets to play with one another. That’s what the tears are for. A remarkable group of young women who put everybody else in front of them and just represented all year long in an amazing way. That’s what the disappointment is for. You know you’re going to win or lose in basketball. … You can’t put an emotion on the win if you’re going to win or the loss because those feelings bubble up after that occurs. And we’re sitting here right now knowing this will be the last time we play with one another and how close we came to doing something absolutely extraordinary.”

The Wahine started the season 6-9, including 0-5 in their final Big West season. Fifteen UH sports move to the Mountain West on July 1.

“People left them for dead over the holidays, ” UCSD coach Heidi VanDerveer said, “and Laura did a great job with her team.”

Entering the title game, the Wahine won 16 of 17, including 10 in a row, to ascend to the eight-team tournament’s fourth seed.

And the Wahine controlled Saturday’s first half, yielding only one fast-break basket and giving All-Big West center Erin Condron little elbow room. The Wahine led 28-20 at the intermission.

“We went into halftime and we were like, ‘Where is our team ?’” VanDerveer said. “I thought we were kind of imposters in the first half. I think sometimes you want something so much that it’s just out of sorts. When we had those 15 minutes at halftime to regroup, we came out with a mission. We wanted to leave it all on the floor for the 20 minutes we had remaining.”

Acknowledging the Wahine had played overtime games the previous two days, the Tritons wanted to accelerate the pace. The intent was to hurry the Wahine into poor shots and passes.

“The first half, I thought we did a really good job of controlling their tempo, ” Beeman said. “They had, maybe, two fast-break points. In the second half, their pressure affected us. We started to play fast on offense. We took bad shots. We turned it over. And it allowed them to transition against us, and that’s where they were able to get their juice. They were able to get more offensive rebounds. This game really came down to, I think, offensive boards at really critical times and their transition.”

The Tritons built a 12-2 advantage in offensive rebounds. They forced 19 turnovers that were redeemed for 21 points. And they scored 14 fast-break points to UH’s two.

The Wahine’s best defensive player, Imani Perez, was limited to 22 minutes, 58 seconds because of foul trouble. She played 13 seconds in the third quarter.

The Wahine built a 32-21 lead early in the third quarter before the Tritons seized the momentum.

Condron and guard Makayla Rose sparked an 11-0 run to tie it with 3 :35 left in the third quarter. The Tritons scored the final six points of the third quarter and eight of the first 10 of the final period to cruise to the title.

Condron finished with 22 points on 10-for-18 shooting, and Rose produced 17 points, eight rebounds and five steals. Condron, Rose and Dymonique Maxie played all 40 minutes for the Tritons.

“In practice we work really hard (on stamina ), ” Rose said. “In summer, we’ve had a lot of conditioning. That helps us prepare to play that many minutes.”

VanDerveer mused : “I bet my bottom dollar, (Rose ) can go out and play another 40 (minutes ). I don’t know about Erin.”

UH forward Saniyah Neverson said it was not easy coming off back-to-back overtime games.

“I think we fought as hard as we could versus a good team, ” Neverson said. “We gave it our all.”

After the game, it was difficult for the Wahine to face the next chapter.

“How amazing these guys are, ” Beeman said. “We came together as a team. I’ve coached for a long time. I’ve had some pretty remarkable teams. This one will go down in the top of a group of girls who just played for one another and loved each other.”
