PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. — When locals wake up in Los Angeles and see rain on the radar, they think about massive puddles along the sides of roads, mudslides and additional headaches on the I-10 and the 405. They don’t think about narrow ribbons of kikuyu winding through Pacific Palisades or how Riviera Country Club handles half an inch of additional water after getting soaked earlier in the week.
As of 6 a.m. local time Thursday, the forecast is not subtle. A wind advisory is in effect for Riviera through 9 p.m., with steady rain this morning and the heaviest bands expected between 10 a.m. and noon Pacific Time. Temperatures are starting in the mid-40s and will struggle to climb beyond the mid-50s, which by Southern California standards feels brisk.
The real story, though, may not be the rain. It’s what follows.
Winds are forecast to ramp up dramatically after noon, with gusts reaching into the mid-30s. That changes everything at Riviera, host of the 2026 Genesis Invitational. The 10th hole becomes even more of a chess match. Tee shots on 15 and 17 hang in the air just a beat longer. And any approach into those firm, perched greens suddenly demands absolute commitment. Yes, a rain-softened course should play wider and approach shots to the small greens will stop faster, but elite golfers hate wind and the randomness it can bring to a round. They can prepare for rain, but wind can drive them nuts.
By midafternoon, the rain chances taper off, giving way to partly cloudy but still windy conditions.
On a brighter note, this morning’s rain should be the last that falls on Riviera this week, with sunshine and calmer conditions forecast for the weekend. The bad news, however, is that Riviera could show its teeth first before those better conditions arrive.
