The Raiders are set for a QB change. That much has been known since they secured the number one overall pick in the draft and Fernando Mendoza became the expected pick there. What some had wondered, however, was whether last year's starter Geno Smith would be held onto as a backup or perhaps a temporary starter until Mendoza was ready. That option never seemed all that realistic and today his exit from Las Vegas became a reality.
Smith left the field in Week 17 with an apparent ankle injury and never returned, leaving the field for the last time.
Prior to that, he had alienated just about everyone. He was short with the media and literally flipped off the fans. Then Immediately following the season he metaphorically flipped off the organization by wiping his social media of anything to do with them. He was done with the Raiders and soon they will officially be done with him.
The only question now is if some team is willing to trade anything for the 35-year-old former Pro Bowler. Which at this point seems unlikely.
More like is the Raiders and Smith will part with the team spent a third round pick to acquire him and paid him $59 million for 15 games in which he led the NFL with 17 interceptions. Some think much of Geno's struggles were to do with the completely inept offense, and that may be true. If so, let the teams that think that step up and get him in a trade. Otherwise, thanks for being the bridge to a top pick QB, Geno. It's been real.
