The Las Vegas Raiders had decisions to make across the offensive line entering Monday's primetime contest versus the Dallas Cowboys in Week 11. Right guard Jackson Powers-Johnson was placed on injured reserve. Head coach Pete Carroll weighed multiple options and arrived at an unforeseen conclusion.
It wasn't rookie Caleb Rogers or veteran Alex Cappa at right guard. Instead, starting center Jordan Meredith moved to guard and was replaced at center by Will Putnam. It proved to be a full-blown disaster as the Cowboys' defensive line dominated the Raiders' interior.
The Cowboys had a new-look defensive line after acquiring Quinnen Williams to play defensive tackle next to Kenny Clark. Williams registered 1.5 sacks as Raiders quarterback Geno Smith was sacked four times. On this rep in particular, Putnam got absolutely embarrassed and pushed back into Smith's lap.
Putnam and the revamped offensive line also struggled to gain Chip Kelly's trust as run blockers. Ashton Jeanty finished with seven rushing yards on six carries. Smith was the team's leading rusher with 14 yards. On the Raiders' opening three offensive possessions, they attempted 14 passes versus just one carry.
If the Raiders knew Putnam and Co. couldn't create rushing lanes, why not start the game with Cappa or Rogers?
