Each year the rookies who report to training camp are accompanied by a handful of select returning players. Usually those are first-year players which means they joined the team last year, but played little or not football in their first year, so they don't have an accrued season.

This year a few more established Raidersshowed up with the rookies, seemingly looking to get a jump on things before the rest of the team arrives next week.

Among those to arrive today were Pro Bowl EDGE Maxx Crosby, former second round pick Jackson Powers-Johnson, and second-year receiver Dont'e Thornton.

Crosby is just the type of guy to take any opportunity given to him to get some extra work in, but he is most likely there because he sat out the offseason program as he rehabs his injury. JPJ also got dinged up in minicamp, so he could be looking to get some rehab in as well.

Thornton's presence is would suggest he is taking his development going into his second season seriously. He was a raw receiver coming out of Tennessee last year who disappointed as a rookie. The 6-5, 205-pounder caught just ten passes for 135 yards with no touchdowns. He consistently struggled to track passes in the air, high point them, and secure deep balls. Which, for an X receiver, is kind of your primary job description.

The Raiders didn't sign or draft an X receiver this offseason, so Thornton has an opportunity to take that role if he can develop. That development started today, nearly a week ahead of his veteran teammates.
