Questions surround the future and fit of a Manchester City attacker
Omar Marmoush is a player who can produce the spectacular and on other occasions he can be a frustrating figure. The Egyptian international made a bright start to life at Manchester City when he signed for the club during the January transfer window of 2025. His goals were crucial to City securing Champions League football for last season. At the time, he did look like a player who could become an important player for his team. From that point onwards, Marmoush has had circumstances go against him and his performances haven’t been consistent enough for him to become a regular starter at City.
The 2025-26 season was a frustrating campaign for Marmoush and his performances at the World Cup for Egypt weren’t what he would’ve hoped for.
Omar Marmoush’s 2025-26 season was a frustrating one. A knee injury cost him games during the early stages of last season. He also missed a significant period of time due to Egypt’s AFCON campaign. After that, Marmoush was viewed by Pep Guardiola primarily as Erling Haaland’s backup.
Also, Marmoush had a disappointing time at the FIFA World Cup with Egypt. Marmoush put in a subdued performance as Egypt beat Australia in their Round of 32 clash on penalties. He was also a substitute as Egypt were beaten 3-2 by Argentina in their Round of 16 clash. All told, Marmoush made four appearances for Egypt and failed to score a goal or register an assist. He had his chances to make an impact at the World Cup as he took eleven shots for Egypt. But Marmoush failed to have the impact at the tournament he’d have liked.
Watching Omar Marmoush for Manchester City and for Egypt at the World Cup, he can be a frustrating player. He is capable of producing the spectacular. However, he lacks consistency in his game. Too often, Marmoush is on the periphery of proceedings. Or he is let down by a poor touch. He desperately needs to improve both aspects of his game to make the grade at Manchester City.
Also, what is Omar Marmoush’s best position? Pep Guardiola used the Egyptian international primarily as a backup to Erling Haaland. Marmoush can play on the left and drift centrally. However, Jeremy Doku has made the left wing his own. Ideally, Marmoush would play off of Erling Haaland. However, it remains to be seen if Enzo Maresca will go down this route.
You do sense that at times Marmoush suffers as a player from not being able to play in a settled role or position. Maybe if he has a defined role or position, Marmoush will return to the sublime form that he showed at Eintracht Frankfurt which earned him a move to the FA Cup and Carabao Cup holders.
Will Omar Marmoush be at Manchester City next season?
Sam Lee has reported in the latest Transfer DealSheet segment for The Athletic that Omar Marmoush could leave Manchester City this summer. It remains to be seen if any clubs will be willing to pay Manchester City’s asking price for the Egyptian international or match Marmoush’s wages to sign him. This will play out over the remainder of the summer transfer window.
It is hard to see City selling Marmoush at this stage. He has only been at the club for a season and a half. Marmoush has shown glimpses of what he is capable of at Manchester City. In 61 appearances he has scored 16 goals and added 6 assists. Marmoush has definitely shown flashes of what he can bring to his team. They just need to be shown more often for him to become a consistent performer at the FA Cup and Carabao Cup holders. Also, based on the flashes of brilliance he is capable of, it is easy to see clubs being interested in signing him this summer.
Final thoughts.
The 2025-26 season and the World Cup have been frustrating for Omar Marmoush. The Egyptian international has had his moments but too often he doesn’t fully grasp those opportunities. His inability to get on the pitch at Manchester City does hinder him. As have injuries and AFCON participation. Those two issues wrecked Marmoush’s 2025-26 season for Manchester City. Marmoush squandered too many gilt-edged chances at the World Cup to have the impact he’d have hoped for.
All of these factors combined mean that it doesn’t appear like Omar Marmoush is the right fit for City. Perhaps if he is healthy this will change. Also, if he puts his chances away at a better rate, and can stay involved in games more often, his fit at City won’t be in question. However, it does appear that there is a chance that Marmoush could leave the FA Cup and Carabao Cup holders this summer.
Frankly, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Marmoush sold if the right offer comes Manchester City’s way. Also, City will need to have a replacement lined up to facilitate such a move. But after watching Marmoush at the World Cup, you do wonder if he can click into gear in an Enzo Maresca side.
