PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia 76ers made a move at the deadline to bring in Quentin Grimes from the Dallas Mavericks and the move provided immediate dividends. The 4-year guard out of Houston was terrific averaging 21.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 4.5 assists while shooting 46.9% from the floor and 37.3% from deep in 28 games with Philadelphia.
Grimes was able to show off more of his game. While he was mostly a 3-and-D player during his previous stops with the New York Knicks and the Mavericks, Grimes showed off an ability to handle No. 1 scoring option responsibilities should the time call for it.
"I've personally had a really good two months here with the team," Grimes said. "Connected with everybody pretty fast, having a good relationship with everybody on the team, from the coaching staff to the players on this team. So the last two months have been really, really good for me, for sure."
Now, the big question surrounding Grimes is his future. The dynamic guard is entering restricted free agency so one has to wonder what will happen when the time comes. When considering his success with the Sixers, one has to assume that he will be back, but, obviously, that remains to be seen.
"Philly, I mean, I'm very comfortable already with the coaching staff and my teammates," Grimes said of free agency. "I feel like I've been here really the whole year, playing with these guys these past two months. So I could definitely see myself being here in the future, but it’s a business at the end of the day, going into the offseason. So we’ll see where that ends up. For sure."
If Grimes were to return, he would slide next to Joel Embiid, Paul George, and Tyrese Maxey and play more of a role like he did in New York and Dallas, but it would be an important one when considering his shooting ability. The Sixers need floor spacers so he would be able to step in and produce right away.
"I mean, just knowing how I ended the season, that's another offensive threat that we could have," Grimes said of the future. "It makes it easier for Joel, Tyrese, myself, PG, whoever’s getting doubled, we got a lot of lot of threats, a lot of scorers up on the court that can make a play for ourselves or for a teammate. So I feel like if we all come back. It would definitely be a problem for sure next year."
The Sixers would like to have Grimes return, but that will depend on how free agency shakes out for himself and the team.
