Ohio State’s black stripe tradition is simple in concept but meaningful in reality. You arrive with it, and you earn the right to lose it.

When it comes off, it signals something more than just progress. It signals trust. That is why Qua Russaw shedding his black stripe this spring matters.

Not just because it confirms he is fitting into the program, but because of what it could represent moving forward. For a defense replacing high-end talent and searching for its next difference-maker on the edge, Russaw is not just another piece.

He might be the swing piece.

More than a milestone — an early signal

Russaw lost his black stripe just seven practices into spring, quickly establishing himself within Ohio State’s defensive culture and earning recognition from coaches and teammates. That timeline matters.

Ohio State does not hand those out easily, especially to transfers, and with a large group of newcomers this offseason, the competition to earn that trust is real.

Russaw becoming one of the early players to shed it suggests he is not just adjusting, he is making an impression. That has already translated onto the field, where Ryan Day noted that Russaw “flashed” in practice with multiple third-down sacks.

That is not just coach-speak. It is an early indicator that Ohio State is looking for production at that position and sees Russaw as someone who can provide it.

The talent Ohio State is betting on

Russaw did not arrive in Columbus as an unknown. He was a five-star recruit and one of the top edge defenders in the country coming out of high school, known for his explosive first step, ability to bend around the edge, and closing speed on quarterbacks.

At Alabama, the production never fully matched the recruiting profile, but the flashes were always there. Over the course of his career, he appeared in more than 20 games, showing versatility with his ability to rush the passer, defend the run, and even drop into coverage, highlighted by two interceptions.

Injuries and depth chart competition limited his consistency, particularly during a season impacted by a foot injury, but the underlying traits never disappeared. That is what Ohio State is betting on. Not just what Russaw has done, but what he can still become.

Why his emergence changes everything up front

Ohio State’s defensive line has talent, but it is still searching for clarity on the edge. Kenyatta Jackson Jr. provides a steady presence, while players like Beau Atkinson and Zion Grady offer upside but are still developing into full-time impact players.

What the unit needs is a second edge rusher who can consistently win one-on-one matchups. That is where Russaw fits in. If he develops into that player, it changes the entire defense. A true edge threat allows Ohio State to generate pressure without relying heavily on blitzing, collapse the pocket in obvious passing situations, and force quarterbacks into quicker decisions.

That ripple effect extends across every level of the defense, making coverage easier and allowing linebackers to play faster and more freely. Elite edge play does not just help a defense. It defines it.

From flashes to consistency

The challenge for Russaw is the same one that followed him earlier in his career. Consistency. The athleticism and tools are obvious, and the early flashes this spring reinforce that. But to reach his ceiling, he has to turn those flashes into reliable, week-to-week production.

That means winning early in reps, developing a more refined pass-rush plan, staying healthy across a full season, and becoming a player offenses must account for on every snap. If those elements come together, the impact could be significant.

Qua Russaw losing his black stripe is a small moment in the context of a long season, but it is also an early signal. A signal that Ohio State may have found something important on the edge.

For a defense with championship aspirations, the emergence of a true difference-maker up front can change everything. Russaw has the profile to be that player. Now it is about turning that potential into production.
