Team USA cptain Hilary Knight

The still-nameless Detroit franchise in the Professional Women’s Hockey League is up to 10 players going into Wednesday’s draft. .


Here’s a look at the players signed:​


Daryl Watts: The first player Rheaume signed was a scoring machine in college, scoring 136 goals at Boston College and Wisconsin. She is third all-time in league scoring, with 10 goals in 27 games last year.

Cayla Barnes: Signed a three-year contract to help anchor the defense, played in Seattle last season, Scored three goals and had eight points in 30 games. Played for Boston College and Ohio State.

Hannah Bilka: Signed a two-year deal after playing a season in Seattle. Also played at Boston College and Ohio State. Had four goals and nine points in 14 games last season.

Jesse Compher: Signed three-year deal after spending last year in Toronto. Grew up watching older brother J.T., now a Detroit Red Wing. Played college hockey at Boston University and Wisconsin. Scored six goals and had 23 points in 30 games last season.

Britta Curl-Salemme: Captained Wisconsin to a pair of NCAA titles and played on three championship teams in five seasons, scoring 86 goals. Set NWHL record with 18 assists with the Minnesota Frost last season. Devoutly religious views have sparked controversy and ire among opposing fans.

Sydney Bard: Had two assists in 30 games with Vancouver last season. Recorded 112 points at Colgate, a school record for defensemen.

Shiann Darkangelo: Brighton native played in Montreal last season, recording four goals and eight points in 30 games. Forward played for Syracuse and Quinnipiac in college. Her brother, Isaac, plays football for the Toronto Argonauts.

Taylor Girard: Macomb Township native scored seven goals and had eight points playing for New York last season. She became the first player to score a natural hat trick in PWHL history last November. Played for Lindenwood and Quinnipiac in college.

Nina Joost-Smith: Defenseman played at Minnesota Duluth before beginning her pro career at Vancouver last season. She had three assists in 20 games.

Hilary Knight: At 36, nearing the end of a brilliant career in UWA hockey. Holds the University of Wisconsin scoring record, male and female, with 143 career goals. Played for Seattle last season with five goals and 14 points in 22 games. She had an assist on the game-tying goal in the gold medal game in Milan and carried the flag during the closing ceremonies.
