SCOTTSDALE, - MARCH 16: Chase Dollander #30 of the Colorado Rockies pitches during the 2024 Spring Breakout Game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Colorado Rockies at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick on Saturday, March 16, 2024 in Scottsdale, Arizona. Last Monday, MLB announced that they are planning to introduce a “tournament format” to the Spring Breakout prospect showcase starting in 2027.
Essentially, the current single-game format would be expanded into two single-elimination tournaments — one in the Cactus League and one in the Grapefruit League. In previous years, the Rockies have sent prospects such as Chase Dollander, Zac Veen, Juan Mejia, Zach Agnos, Kyle Karros, Charlie Condon, Cole Carrigg and plenty of others. This year’s contest will take place on March 21st against prospects from the Arizona Diamondbacks at Salt River Fields.
What are your thoughts on a new tournament? Is it a good thing, or is it a precursor for MLB to be more like the NBA, where there seems to be a new tournament added (or at least floated) every season?
