Will Smith, the Los Angeles Dodgers’ star catcher, was one of the American players picked to represent the U.S.A in the World Baseball Classic. However, it seems he might be there with another intention as well.

FanSided’s Mark Powell believes so as well, as he thinks after Detroit Tigers two-time Cy Young Tarik Skubal’s strong start against Great Britain, the Dodgers should push to make a blockbuster trade for him.

The trade would look like this:

Dodgers get: LHP Tarik Skubal

Tigers get: No. 27 overall prospect OF Zyhir Hope, L.A. No. 6 prospect RHP River Ryan, L.A. No. 17 prospect 3B Chase Harlan

“The Tigers are backed into a corner with Skubal. They can either play out this season, try to contend and then hope to extend the two-time AL Cy Young winner, or trade him before or during a campaign in which they're expected to win the AL Central…I tend to be in the 'trade him now' camp. As much as I love Skubal, every report that's come out about his negotiations with the Tigers (or lack thereof) paints a worse picture. Detroit even lowballed their ace in arbitration. Skubal claims he wants to stay in Detroit and would be open to an extension, but it's hard to believe. The relationship between Skubal (and Scott Boras) and the Tigers front office cannot be easily repaired…The Dodgers don't have to trade for Tarik Skubal, as their rotation is deep enough as is. However, with the recent spring struggles of Roki Sasaki and the unpredictable nature of Shohei Ohtani on the mound (injury-wise), adding another top-tier arm is a good idea. Blake Snell won't be ready for Opening Day, either,” Powell wrote.

This past season, Skubal posted a 13-6 record, a 2.21 ERA, 241 Ks, and a WHIP of 0.891 over 195 innings pitched. After this season, Skubal is projected to receive an eight-year, $300 million deal, which is definitely in the Dodgers’ wheelhouse.

Hopefully, Smith did enough convincing to make Skubal ready to leave, otherwise the Dodgers will have to compete with other teams jacking up the price in free agency.
