After Prince Harry's surprising appearance at the NBA Finals Game 5 Saturday night, a game that gave the New York Knicks their first championship in 53 years, many were wondering what made the Duke of Sussex decide to head to the game.

That became clear Sunday, when he attended the 2026 Warrior Games in San Antonio, continuing his support of wounded, injured and ill service members and veterans through adaptive sports.

Prince Harry spent the day visiting with competitors and their families at several events throughout the Games. He began at the cycling competition, where he surprised athletes and family members by serving lunch, before attending a pickleball demonstration and meeting with competitors representing each service branch.

He later participated in the opening day of wheelchair basketball, handing out the game ball before a matchup between the Marine Corps and Air Force teams.

The Warrior Games, founded in 2010, provide a competitive athletic environment for recovering service members and veterans dealing with combat injuries, illnesses, post-traumatic stress disorder and other conditions. The event features athletes from across the country representing the Army, Marine Corps, Navy/Coast Guard, Air Force/Space Force and Special Operations Command.

Prince Harry first attended the Warrior Games in 2013 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The experience inspired him to establish the Invictus Games Foundation the following year, expanding the concept of adaptive sports competition to wounded and injured service members around the world.

A former captain in the British Army, Prince Harry served for 10 years and completed two tours of duty in Afghanistan. He has remained active in supporting military communities and has attended multiple Warrior Games events since 2013, most recently in San Diego in 2023.

The 2026 Warrior Games are being held June 13-20 in San Antonio, with the Henry B. González Convention Center serving as the primary venue. Competitors are participating in 11 adaptive sports, including archery, cycling, indoor rowing, powerlifting, sitting volleyball, swimming, track and field, wheelchair basketball and wheelchair rugby. Pickleball is being featured as an exhibition sport.

All Warrior Games events are free and open to the public.
