Brielle Root doubled to drive in Bibs Felton with nobody out in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead No. 5 Keyser to a 4-3 win over No. 6 PikeView in the Class AA state softball tournament Wednesday at Little Creek Park in South Charleston.
The loss ended PikeView’s season at 23-9. The Panthers were playing in the state tournament for the first time.
The Golden Tornado’s last at-bat attack didn’t take long. Felton led off with a four-pitch walk, and Root sent the first pitch she saw to right field to easily drive in Felton with the winning run.
PikeView took a 3-2 lead in the third. Bella Delida singled in Emma Weiss with the tying run, and Emma Compton later came in on a passed ball to put the Panthers ahead.
Keyser reliever Leighton Johnson held the Panthers to one hit over 3 1/3 innings.
PikeView dropped its opener to Herbert Hoover on Tuesday, but rebounded to beat Brooke 4-1 in an elimination game for its first-ever state tournament win.
