ELKHART — As it has been twice already this season, the 400-yard freestyle relay was the most anticipated event for Concord and Northridge girls swimming fans Saturday at the Elkhart Aquatics Center.
This time it was different.
Heading into the final event of Saturday’s girls swim and dive sectional in Elkhart, the Minutemen led 400-398 over the Raiders. After winning the 400 but taking team losses to Northridge during the regular season dual and the NLC Meet, the senior class at Concord had an opportunity to finally knock off their rivals.
As the team of Brynlee Shay Yoder, Catie Brenneman, Mady Oiler and Mya Ernsberger finished with a time of 3:35.69 —10 seconds in front of the Northridge relay team— Concord was able to celebrate its sixth-consecutive sectional title and 10th overall with a team score of 440, edging Northridge (430).
The Raiders’ depth had helped create wins over a top-heavy Concord team early in the year, but the Minutemen finally put its best performance together and saw themselves win 10-of-12 events to advance six different swimmers to the state meet next weekend.
Four-time event winners for the champions included Brenneman (200 Free, 100 Free, 200 Free Relay, 400 Free Relay), Brynlee Paige Yoder (200 Medley Relay, 200 Individual Medley, 500 Free, 400 Free Relay) and Ernsberger (200 Medley Relay, 100 Butterfly, 100 Backstroke, 400 Free Relay).
Gia Sponseller won three events for the Minutemen — the 200-yard medley relay, 200-yard freestyle relay and the 100-yard backstroke.
The only two events not won by Concord were claimed by Northridge. Audrina Eads paced the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.08 and diver Bella Estep punched a ticket to the diving regional in Mishawaka with a score of 322.60. Joining Estep will be Elkhart’s Camryn Tyrakowski (306.90) and Goshen duo Selah Miller (284.05) and Renee Welling (266.45).
Mishawaka will host the diving regional Tuesday, Feb. 10 at 6 p.m. The top eight scorers will advance to the girls swimming state finals in Indianapolis at the IU-Indy Natatorium. The two-day state meet opens Friday, Feb.
