TEXARKANA, TX (KTAL/KMSS) — Pleasant Grove quarterback Colt Yancey has made an impact with the Hawks since day one.
So far this season, he has thrown over 2500 yards, 38 touchdowns, and just three interceptions.
In the Hawks’ first playoff game last week against Brownsboro, Yancey threw for over 400 yards, aside from one series in the second half, all in the first half.
“He’s a full tilt warrior, coach’s kid, does things the right way, going to lead by example, doesn’t have a bad day, and so does all the little things the right way,” head coach Josh Gibson said. “And then you got a 6’2, 220 pound kid that can make all the throws and he makes the right reads and he takes time to study those things. And so he’s just really helped us level up our offense.”
Five of Yancey’s 38 touchdowns this season came in the first half against Brownsboro last week.. Yancey credits the weapons he has on the team.
“We have, I think, the best receiving corps in the state of Texas, and I just let them make plays,” Yancey said. “I just trust my receivers out there and they just made plays. Like they kept running the same coverage over and over, that press man, and I just let Spencer Browning and Walker Wright make plays and they made plays.”
Yancey began playing quarterback in 7th grade, but preparing for this role came way before, growing up with his football coach dad.
“Just watching him coach and watching him play, and I’ve always wanted to be like him and He’s probably my biggest role model. So I’ve always wanted to be like him,” Yancey said.
A quarterback at Tulsa, Blake Yancey has passed down a lot of knowledge to Colt. As a coach on the Pleasant Grove staff, he’s never too far away on the sidelines to give more advice.
“Most of the time, it’s really special. I enjoy having him on the sidelines. It’s gonna be weird when I go to college and he’s not there,” Yancey said. “But, then sometimes he gets onto me, but I mean, that’s just, he’s done it so long that like, he understands it.”
Yancey plans to continue in his father’s footsteps, playing on the college level and becoming a coach.
But first, Yancey and the Hawks host Canton on Friday, November 21 for the second round of playoffs. Kickoff is at 6:30 pm.
