Posh pull off upset to win Vertu Trophy


Peterborough United made history at Wembley, becoming the first club to retain the Vertu Trophy with a shock victory over League One champions Birmingham City.

Darren Ferguson’s side tore up the script in style, outplaying the favourites in a composed and clinical performance under the arch.

The breakthrough came courtesy of a superbly struck free-kick from former Aston Villa prospect Harley Mills, before captain Hector Kyprianou doubled the advantage with a thunderous long-range effort to put Posh firmly in control before the interval.

Birmingham, fresh off securing the League One title and buoyed by a recent league win over Peterborough, were expected to dominate—but found themselves out of rhythm and short of ideas in the final third.

Ricky Jade-Jones and Kwame Poku both came close to adding a third, while the Blues were restricted to limited chances. Jed Steer produced a sharp stop to deny top scorer Jay Stansfield, and Keshi Anderson squandered one of Birmingham’s best opportunities, blazing over from close range.

It was a disciplined, fearless display from Peterborough, who not only lifted the trophy but sent a clear message about their quality and ambition moving forward.
