Pochettino already becomes winningest USMNT World Cup coach ever

Two weeks ago, Mauricio Pochettino had never coached a World Cup game. Now he is already the winningest coach the U.S. men's national team has ever had at the World Cup.

With wins over Paraguay and Australia in group play and Bosnia-Herzegovina in the round of 32, Pochettino now owns three World Cup victories — more than any coach in American men's soccer history.

Bruce Arena had two in 2002, the year the Americans reached the quarterfinals. Robert Millar got there in 1930, winning two group-stage games to see U.S. reach the semifinals.

The U.S. hired Pochettino in September of 2024, right after the Americans were bounced from the group stage of the Copa America, losing to Uruguay and Panama in a tournament that was supposed to be a warmup for the home World Cup.

Pochettino replaced Gregg Berhalter with a $6 million a year contract, making him the highest-paid coach in U.S. soccer history.
