PLEASANT PLAINS — The Pleasant Plains girls basketball team conjured up a flurry of 3s and takeaways in the second quarter to nab its second ever state berth on Monday, March 2.
The host Cardinals led 31-13 at halftime before students swarmed the floor in a 54-37 victory over Downs Tri-Valley in the simmering Class 2A supersectional.
Plains (30-2) advances to the state semifinals at CEFCU Arena in Normal on Thursday, March 5 at 2:30 p.m. where it meets Breese Central (30-3). The winner gets either Bryon or Elgin St. Edward in the championship game on Saturday at noon.
The Cardinals led just 9-8 at the end of the first quarter before senior guards Bailey Leach and Grace Sabatka converted back-to-back 3s to underpin a streak of 10 unanswered points. Leach supplied two more 3s in what amounted to be a 16-1 run, while senior forward Anna Weber also dominated the interior and ended the first half with a putback at the buzzer.
Leach, who also shot 7 of 10 from the free throw line, and Weber each generated 18 points. Sabatka added seven points.
MOUNT PULASKI 48, ALBION EDWARDS COUNTY 38: The Hilltoppers similarly clinched their second ever state appearance after rallying ahead 36-34 by the end of the third quarter.
Senior guard Alyson Murphy supplied a team-best 22 points, including 14 in the second half. She went 8-for-8 from the free throw line. Junior guard Addison Brown hit two 3s in the third period and finished with eight points, while senior Elayna Marten had 12 points.
Mount Pulaski (32-1) trailed 25-22 at halftime.
The Hilltoppers draw Mount Sterling Brown County (31-3) in the state semifinals at CEFCU Arena on Thursday, March 5 at 10 a.m. The winner faces either Deer Creek-Mackinaw or Rockford Christian in the championship game on Saturday at 10 a.m.
