Apr. 1—The Bears will be the hunted at the Mountain 8 Conference boys' golf tournament later this month.

And it is familiar territory for Pisgah.

The Bears will be shooting for a sixth-straight conference championship when the three-day tournament starts April 16.

Pisgah not only has tradition on its side, but the Bears are also loaded with both talent and experience — with three seniors, a junior and a freshman in the five-player rotation.

"We have three seniors and a junior that have been playing for us for quite a while," said Pisgah coach Bentley Rogers.

Pisgah won its fifth-straight title on the final day last spring and Rogers expects another competitive conference tournament. Franklin and West Henderson are the top two contenders chasing the Bears.

"One of the things we have going for us is that we have guys that have been in this position before," Rogers said. "Last year, it was a very hard championship to win as it came down to the final round. I'm hoping our experience will help us this year. The teams we have been competing with [Franklin and West Henderson], we are all about the same this year."

Pisgah also looks to be peaking at the right time as different players have recorded par or under-par scores over the course of the season

"The season has gone pretty well so far," Rogers said. "We have done really well in our matches so far."

Matthew Mehaffey is the Bears' leader, and the senior is looking to qualify for the state tournament for the fourth straight year. He shot a five-over par 76 at the regional tournament last spring. Pisgah finished in seventh place at the regional last year.

"Mehaffey shot a [five-under] 67 at Springdale [this season]," Rogers said. "Matthew has a pretty solid game and he doesn't let things bother him too much. Matthew, when he has it, overcomes adversity on the golf course. When it is on the line, that is when he performs the best."

Senior Jonah Smith and junior Heath Rogers have also carded solid scores this season. Smith has also been in the lineup since his freshman season.

"They have both won medalist this year," Rogers said. "Jonah is just a good golfer. Heath started playing for us last year and he is a self-taught golfer. Heath can shoot in the 70s just about any time he goes out and plays."

Senior Micah Devlin has delivered consistency for the Bears, Rogers said.

"Micah has a good short game, and he is always around the green," Rogers said.

Rogers said that freshman Brantley Henderson has worked hard to improve his game.

"Brantley plays golf on the weekends, and he is very dedicated to it," Rogers said. "It is a transition to go from the tees you play in middle school to the tees you play in high school. But Brantley has handled that transition really well."

The Mountain 8 tournament will be held April 16 at Connestee Falls, April 21 at Springdale Country Club and April 27 at Highland Falls. A trip to the regional tournament will be on the line for the eight schools.
