I understand why many Pittsburgh Pirates fans are worried that the front office won't do what's needed at the trade deadline to give them a chance to win at a high level. If history says anything, the Pirates typically don't do what they have to do on both sides of the baseball to give themselves a chance to win.

Fortunately, this season seems a lot different than in years past, and the offseason proved that had the Pirates not done what was needed on the trade market and in free agency in the winter, things would likely be a lot different.

Still, I understand why the question is there about not being buyers, but Levi Weaver of The Athletic recently shut all that down, suggesting that Pittsburgh is going to do what's needed to ensure it has a chance to win at a very high level.

“No, sorry. I know it’s been a while since you’ve heard this word in Pittsburgh, but what you’re hearing is the word B-U-Y-E-R-S. As in, “acquiring more talent at the trade deadline,” rather than trading it away for prospects. What’s that? No, no, no, I assure you it’s entirely legal … yes, even in Pittsburgh; there are no city ordinances that I’m aware of. No, Paul Skenes is not going to be kidnapped by a demogorgon — again, it’s buyers.

“Yes, I’m sure you do have questions for Bob Nutting; I can’t say for sure if he forgot that the playoffs existed, or if he was doing some avant-garde performance art about austerity amongst the billionaire class, or if there was some other reason that the Pirates haven’t won the division since 1992 (and since then, have only made the playoffs in 2013, 2014 and 2015),” Levi Weaver of The Athletic wrote.

Even if the Pirates don't want to be massive buyers and attempt to make the right moves by doing things differently than some other contending teams, whether that means soft buying and possibly moving on from some prospects that they are content with, but not others, to make that big splash move, I think that's fine for now.

On the flip side, I'd like to see the Pirates make a big move if one becomes available, especially if they continue to be in a position to compete for a playoff spot in the second half.
