PITTSBURGH — Pirates pitchers combined to strand 11 runners, and Henry Davis hit a big two-run home run in Pittsburgh’s 5-1 rubber match win over the Mariners at PNC Park on Thursday afternoon.

Scoring Plays

Bottom 1st, 1-0 PIT: Brandon Lowe connected on his 19th home run of the season, a solo shot to right field off Bryce Miller (3-2) to put the Pirates (41-40) ahead.

Bottom 3rd, 3-0 PIT: After Jared Triolo singled to begin the inning, Henry Davis hit a two-run home run to right-center to extend the lead.

Top 5th, 3-1 PIT: J.P. Crawford got the Mariners (41-41) on the board with an RBI single to right field off Bubba Chandler (3-7). The Pirates starter walked the first two batters of the inning.

Bottom 8th, 5-1 PIT: Lowe ripped an RBI single over the head of Crawford at shortstop to tack on an insurance run against Alex Hoppe. Ryan O’Hearn singled home another run to increase the lead to four.

Key Moments

The Mariners had the bases loaded with two out in the fourth, but Jake Mangum made an inning-ending sliding catch on a Cole Young fly ball to left-center.

J.P. Crawford’s RBI single in the fifth gave Seattle runners on the corners with non outs. Chandler wiggled out of the jam by striking out Cal Raleigh and getting Julio Rodríguez to bounce into a double play.

Seattle again threatened in the sixth by loading the bases with two outs, but Evan Sisk got Crawford to bounce out to short to keep the two-run lead intact. The Mariners loaded the bases with two outs yet again the following inning, but Mason Montgomery got pinch-hitter Rob Refsynder to fly out to left.

Player of the Game

Henry Davis homered, doubled and stole a base. It was his first multi-hit game since May 1 against the Reds.

Stat to Know

Bryan Reynolds is one of three Pirates to have a 30-game on-base streak within the same season since 2000. He joins Brian Giles (four times) and Jason Kendall (twice). Reynolds’ on-base streak is the longest of his career in one season and the longest active in MLB.

Notable Performances

  • Bubba Chandler: 5.1 innings, five hits, one run, three walks, four strikeouts, 75 pitches/46 strikes
  • Henry Davis: 2 for 3, one home run, one double, two RBI, two runs, one steal
  • Brandon Lowe: 2 for 4, one home run, two RBI, one run

Noteworthy

  • Bryan Reynolds extended his hitting streak to 15 games, which is the third-longest of his career. Brandon Lowe has now hit safely in nine straight games, which extends a season-high.
  • The Pirates eclipsed last year’s home run total at PNC Park (49) by hitting two in the win. Pittsburgh now has 51 homers at home this year in 42 games.
  • Henry Davis’ home run was his first opposite-field home run since 2023.
  • Bubba Chandler has a 2.82 ERA over his last four starts.
  • 1B Spencer Horwitz (left hamstring strain) was placed on the 10-day injured list. INF Jack Brannigan was recalled from Double-A Altoona.
