HERSHEY, Pa. – Local wrestlers were present in a fair quantity at the second day of the PIAA girls’ championships at Giant Center. But they especially had quality.

Entering the day with four quarterfinalists, all four made it to the semifinals, and three of them will be competing in the championship round Saturday afternoon, back at Giant Center.

Action from Day 2 of the PIAA wrestling tournament

Rarely does the degree of synergy occur that happened for Juliet Alt and Violette Lasure. The pair of Chestnut Ridge wrestlers found themselves on mats next to each other while winning their semifinal bouts against opponents from the same school.

Alt finished a bit earlier. She defeated Paige Jox of Mt. Lebanon 4-1 to move into the 148 championship bout.

By the time Alt settled into the corner of the Giant Center to cheer on Lasure, Lasure was just seconds away from recording a pin in 3:40 against Camilla Hathaway, also of Mt. Lebanon.

Alt recorded an escape in the second period and a takedown early in the third period to take a 4-0 lead.

Jox escaped late in the third, but Alt was scarcely concerned as the clock wound down.

“I wasn’t worried,” Alt said. “Obviously, her escaping wasn’t part of the plan, but I wouldn’t say one point was huge with 15 seconds left.”

Alt will face Jameson Strickland of Sun Valley in the 148 championship bout.

Meanwhile, Lasure’s victory was in little doubt. She already had a first-period takedown and a second period reversal before recording the fall.

Next up for Lasure will be Hayden Manning of Abington Heights in the 155 gold medal match.

Earlier in the day, Alt won her quarterfinal with a pin in 42 seconds against Daniella Maxwell of North Penn. Lasure also won her quarterfinal by a pin in the first minute, taking 58 seconds to end her contest against Annette Barry of Neshaminy.

“Violette is not only my sister, but she’s my biggest supporter, and I’m hers,” Alt said. “I’m always in her corner. We switched weights. I’d always get worked up before Violette’s matches, now I can get mine done before going to support her.”

Also heading to the championship round is Greater Johnstown’s Sayona Harris-Haye. She won her 136 semifinal 3-1 over Sarah Pearson of Downingtown West.

Pearson opened the second period with an escape to take a brief lead.

Harris-Haye recorded a takedown shortly after for the only points she would need.

In the quarterfinals, Harris-Haye pinned Maggie Alfera of Laurel in 4:40.

Awaiting Harris-Haye in the championship bout is Zoe Fuhrman of Montgomery.

The last local wrestler, Mylah Steinbuch of Bedford, did not make it to the finals, but did assure herself of a medal when she won her 285 quarterfinal. She pinned Kindal Bizzell-Brown of Strath Haven in 2:41, recovering from an early takedown.

In the semifinals, Steinbuch had a 3-0 lead after the first period, but Southmoreland’s Zoey Murphy had a third-period takedown to take the lead for good. Four near-fall points at the end pushed the final score to 8-3.
