Phillies trade rumor on struggling All-Star infielder makes sense for one reason originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

The Philadelphia Phillies got off to a very poor 9-19 start to the season, but under Don Mattingly, they've gotten back close to .500 at 20-22 on the year.

This resurgence has somewhat closed the door on a potential sell-off at the trade deadline this year, but that doesn't mean the Phillies are totally safe just yet.

Robert Murray of Fansided.com shared a trade rumor for the Phillies that would have a struggling All-Star infielder, Alec Bohm, on the move at this year's deadline.

"If they sell, Alec Bohm feels like a change of scenery candidate," Murray writes. Bohm has been a trade candidate, so this rumor shouldn't come as a surprise.

But, beyond simply this rumor not being a surprise, it actually makes a ton of sense for the Phillies to pull off such a trade if they are sellers for one clear reason.

Phillies have a clear reason to trade Alec Bohm

Assuming the Phillies wind up as sellers, or even if there's a chance to land a new third baseman to upgrade over Bohm, the All-Star is a sensible trade candidate for an obvious reason.

Between Bohm's struggles this season and his tumultuous personal life, sending Bohm to a new team could help him put the past behind him and get back on track as a professional baseball player.

He's still a solid player, as he can be a decent contact hitter with decent defense at third base. Bohm might not return to All-Star form, but if he could get a change of scenery, it might prove to be a big help in turning his season and potentially career around.

Bohm has had it tough lately, and sometimes all a player needs amid such hard times is to get a change of scenery. Giving Bohm that change of scenery is a big reason why the Phillies should look to trade Bohm this season.

If 2026 goes south, Bohm is the most obvious trade candidate on the roster. And for Bohm, personally, a trade might be just what he needs during this contract year to get back on track as a quality starting Major Leaguer.
