The Philadelphia Phillies seem to have most of the roster set with Opening Day rapidly approaching, though there are a few remaining spots to be determined.

Primarily, the team is facing some questions about the final relief pitchers who will break camp with the big-league roster.

“If right-hander Orion Kerkering is healthy — he has missed most of the spring because of a strained right hamstring — there might be just one bullpen job available,” Todd Zolecki wrote for MLB.com. “That’s because left-hander Kyle Backhus likely has secured a job based on a strong spring. He has pitched six scoreless Grapefruit League innings, striking out six and walking one.”

The eighth and final bullpen spot might come down to Tim Mayza, Zach McCambley, Zach Pop and Chase Shugart. In any case, the Phillies are sure to shuffle the relief corps. as the season goes on and they pursue a World Series championship.

Philadelphia Phillies Pitcher Daniel Robert Clutches Chest, Collapses In First Bullpen Back From Health Scare

Further down the line has been reliever Daniel Robert, who appeared in 15 games for the Phillies last year. Robert was working his way back from a health scare that doctors labeled as an “unknown cardiovascular event” and seems to have suffered a concerning setback on Sunday.

“Incredibly scary scene here at Phillies camp,” Phillies Nation reporter Ty Daubert wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “Reliever Daniel Robert just went down during his first bullpen of the spring after grabbing his chest. He suffered a cardiovascular event last year. He’s sitting up and conscious but surrounded by medical personnel.”

Philadelphia Phillies Pitcher Credited Team Medical Staff With Saving His Life

Robert had remained off of the mound since last October, when he was due to throw one of his final bullpen sessions of the year. He collapsed on the mound and Phillies’ medical personnel conducted CPR and used an external defibrillator to shock his heart.

Later, Robert credited the team staff for saving his life.

“I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to play this season, but if I was able to, I wanted it to be here because of the way the Phillies supported me,” Robert told NBC Sports Philadelphia’s Jim Salisbury last month. “All the tests show I’m healthy. The Phillies helped me get to see some of the best doctors in the country.”

Daubert added that Robert was able to walk away from the mound with Emergency Medical Services personnel on Sunday. But without any additional updates on his health as of this writing, it’s hard to say what will come next for the veteran reliever.
