Pittsburgh Pirates pitching coach Bill Murphy has drawn the ire of opposing broadcasters this season. It’s not unusual for teams to get on each other’s nerves during a mid-summer series. But a broadcaster-pitching coach beef is something new.
With the Pirates traveling across the state to take on the Phillies this week the home announcers have gotten a close look at Murphy’s leisurely pace during his mound visits. They have not liked what they’ve seen. There are concerns about the pace of play and Murphy’s health this week.
The first clip comes from Monday night when Murphy made a mound visit and the radio announcers were beside themselves watching him walk.
“What is he walking so slowly for? Does he have a bad back?” (Go to the 32-second mark)
Two nights later Murphy was on another mound visit when the television broadcast not only noted how slowly he walks but put a timer on the screen to see how long it took him to get back to the dugout.
This is not new. Murphy is notorious for taking his time. The Cubs put a timer up for Murphy earlier this season as well.
Murphy was asked about his walk by SportsNet Pittsburgh’s Hanna Mears in April and he had a hilarious explanation for his slow pace saying, “I’m a goofy guy. I’m afraid… I just don’t want to fall.” When you put it that way, it’s kind of messed up all these announcers are so annoyed by a guy who is just trying to be cautious.
