The Philadelphia Phillies suffered a brutal blow to their bullpen Sunday morning after Jose Alvarado was suspended 80 games after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance.
Phillies beat writer for MLB.com, Todd Zolecki, shared MLB's announcement on the suspension of Alvarado. MLB's press release on Alvarado's suspension is as follows:
"The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced today that Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Jose Alvarado has received an 80-game suspension without pay after testing positive for exogenous Testosterone, a performance-enhancing substance, in violation of Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. The suspension of Alvarado is effective immediately."
Alvarado's suspension is a brutal one for the Phillies for multiple reasons. Not only will the Phillies lose Alvarado for the next 80 games, but he will also be ineligible to pitch in the postseason for the Phillies if the Phillies make it.

With the Phillies' bullpen already being shaky to begin the year, the loss of Alvarado for not just the majority of the regular season, but the entire postseason, creates a huge hole that the Phillies will need to fill.
John Clark of NBC Sports Philadelphia shared the Phillies' statement on Alvarado's suspension.
"The Phillies fully support Major League Baseball's Joint Prevention and Treatment Program and are disappointed to hear today's news of Jose's violation."
Alvarado, so far in 2025, was off to a great start for the Phillies as their main closer and left-handed reliever. In 20 games, Alvarado pitched 20 innings with a 2.70 ERA and seven saves. Alvarado also netted four wins and one loss, while striking out 25 and walking just 4 batters.
The Phillies needed to add a bullpen arm even before the Alvarado suspension, but now it becomes a desperate need for the Phillies. Matt Strahm takes over as the high-leverage lefty, while Jordan Romano needs to step up in Alvarado's absence.
Philadelphia's season drastically changed following the suspension of Alvarado. His role in the Phillies bullpen was a massive one, and his suspension creates a massive chasm the Phillies front office will need to fill.
