Phillies' Jose Alvarado sends NSFW message on World Baseball Classic insurance issue originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Philadelphia Phillies left-handed reliever Jose Alvarado was denied insurance to represent his home country of Venezuela at the 2026 World Baseball Classic.
The veteran announced the disappointing news on his Instagram page on Sunday. Alvarado is one of many Major League players to be blocked from participating in the 20-team international tournament, which begins March 5.
All-Star infielders Francisco Lindor and Carlos Correa were excluded from Puerto Rico's roster for insurance issues, and Alvarado's potential teammate, second baseman and 2017 AL MVP Jose Altuve, was also denied insurance to play for Venezuela.
Alvarado is angry at Spring Training with Phillies
Alvarado spoke with reporters about his insurance issues at the Phillies camp on Friday and expressed his anger.
"That's straight up b******t," Alvarado said in Spanish, translated by Master Flip on X. "I don't care who's listening. I'm speaking for my country here. I'm talking about the hunger I felt to compete with my country's name on my chest," the nine-year veteran added.
"That's the dream every kid grows up chasing. And the way they did me wrong? It's pure BS."
Alvarado is preparing for his sixth season with the Phillies after the NL East club picked up his $9 million option. He served an 80-game suspension last year for testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance.
