There has been one prevailing storyline impacting the last decade or so of Philadelphia Phillies baseball: the team's starting pitchers putting together incredible seasons but falling short of the NL Cy Young Award.
Zack Wheeler has lost the award a few times after some incredible seasons. Last season, Cristopher Sanchez came so close to winning it, if not for Paul Skenes putting together one of the best seasons from a pitcher in a long time.
Now, with Jacob Misiorowski putting out highlight tapes with ridiculous 100+ mph pitches, Sanchez looks to be second-fiddle to the Milwaukee Brewers' ace. However, Bleacher Report's Zachary D. Rymer is predicting the Phillies will finally overcome this Cy Young curse and see one of their aces win the Cy Young award.
"Cristopher Sanchez will pull away in the NL Cy Young award race," Rymer predicts. "Call it an overly pessimistic hunch, but... is what Misiorowski is doing sustainable?"
For as elite as Misiorowski has been for the Brewers this season, it's hard not to worry, at least a little bit, about him constantly throwing so hard, so often.
Add in that he's closing in on his career-high in innings, and Misiorowski is heading into some truly uncharted territory. Even though he's incredible, if his innings count is low, it's going to be hard for Misiorowski to beat out Sanchez.
Even though the Phillies' lefty ace has struggled a bit in June after a scoreless May, he still has a 2.13 ERA with 127 strikeouts and a 9-3 record in 17 starts with 110 innings pitched, the most in baseball.
Misiorowski's 1.45 ERA in 16 starts across 99 innings is very impressive, and like the leader for the Cy Young award. But if he doesn't go too far beyond his career high in innings, especially if the Brewers want to save him for October, Misiorowski might lose the Cy Young award to Sanchez.
Besides, it's not totally impossible for Misiorowski to be figured out during one of his starts, and to allow a few runs to score and raise his ERA to around Sanchez's level.
Rymer is predicting Sanchez wins the NL Cy Young award, thanks mainly in part to Misiorowski failing to match the innings of the Phillies lefty.
If there's a big enough of a difference, and the ERAs and strikeouts aren't too far apart, Sanchez could easily take the lead in the Cy Young poll.
Even though it might seem far-fetched right now, seeing Sanchez win the NL Cy Young award by season's end would not be shocking. He's been incredible and is a lot more of a sure thing than Misiorowski, even if the Brewers ace has a higher ceiling.
