As Wrexham’s preseason reaches its end and the club’s second attempt to gain promotion to the Premier League edges ever closer, manager Phil Parkinson has suggested that transfer activity at the Racecourse Ground could soon ramp up.
Compared to 12 months ago, Wrexham have been virtually silent in the transfer market, having brought in just two senior players thus far.
First through the doors was full-back Danny Imray, who arrived from Crystal Palace for a fee believed to be around £5 million ($6.7 million), according to Wales Online. The promising 23-year-old will likely look to fill the void left by Manchester City’s Issa Kaboré, who spent last season on loan at the Racecourse Ground from the Premier League giants.

Then, on Wednesday, the club announced it had signed Preston North End captain Ben Whiteman. The 30-year-old midfielder joins after six seasons on the books at Championship rivals, with the Red Dragons said to have shelled out potentially as much as £3 million ($4.04 million) for his services.
“It's an amazing feeling to be here, I'm thrilled to sign for Wrexham,” Whiteman said upon his arrival. “I think any Championship player at this moment in time wants to join this Football Club.
“Wrexham is a Club that wants to get to the Premier League and so do I. So once the interest was there, it was really hard to ignore.”
Parkinson added, “We’re delighted to welcome Ben to the Football Club. He's a very experienced Championship player, and we’re looking forward to working with him in the coming seasons.”
However, if Parkinson’s comments after their 1-0 friendly loss to Sunderland on Sunday are to be believed, then Whiteman won’t be the last new arrival.

“I think the league is going to be stronger this year,” he said, via The Leader. “I feel that it’s been good for us to have all of the players signed last summer here together, we didn’t have that last preseason as we signed them all as the transfer window was progressive. It’s good to have everybody together, and I think there’s more to come from this group. I’m hoping we’ll make a few more additions along the way as well.”
Regardless of how many more players could yet make the move to Wales, Parkinson added that he was pleased with how his side had performed this summer, beating Manchester United and Leeds United, tying with Wisła Kraków, and losing to Sunderland and Liverpool.
“Taking everything into account in terms of the traveling in between, the lads have been brilliant; they really have,” he told team media. “They have tackled every session, they have been brilliant going out into the communities we have been at, and they have represented their club very well.
“We go back now. Middlesbrough on Friday and then we play Wigan on Monday. The Friday game is the Carabao Cup, but the Wigan game has got a lot of importance as well because we need to make sure, as we go into the week of the Cardiff game, we have got another block of minutes in the lads’ legs.”
Their final preseason friendly against Wigan Athletic represented their last opportunity to get everyone game-ready before taking on Middlesbrough - who recently signed two U.S. Men’s National Team stars - in the EFL Cup, marking their first competitive game of the season. They then travel to Cardiff City for their Championship opener on August 17.
