Legendary golfer Phil Mickelson made a major announcement on Thursday afternoon about his status for the upcoming Masters Tournament. Mickelson made the unexpected decision to withdraw from next week’s major, the first of four on the 2026 PGA Tour calendar.

The 55-year-old Mickelson cited a family matter as the reason for his withdrawal.

“Unfortunately, I will not play in the Masters Tournament next week and will be out for an extended period of time as my family continues to navigate a personal health matter,” Mickelson wrote in a statement.

Earlier this week, it was announced that Tiger Woods will not be participating in the 2026 Masters as he enters treatment following a recent DUI arrest. Woods has won five Masters titles, which is second all-time, behind only Jack Nicklaus, who has won six Masters titles.

The 2026 Masters Tournament kicks off at Augusta National on Thursday, April 9, and runs through Sunday, April 12. It marks the 90th edition of the Masters Tournament.
