Six-time major champion Phil Mickelson has been accused of "nonconsensual and inappropriate physical contact" with a female employee at the Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.
The allegation resulted in his immediate removal from the golf grounds and revocation of his membership at the club.
The club released a lengthy statement announcing that it conducted a thorough investigation into the incident and stands by the decision to remove Mickelson. The club has declined to comment further on the incident, as Mickelson's attorneys have indicated that a lawsuit could arise.
"There is a great deal of misinformation circulating and, while Phil’s full attention is devoted to a private family health matter, he has retained defamation counsel and is determined to hold accountable any publication or individual trafficking in speculation or false rumors," attorney Tom Clare said in a statement to Golf Digest.
The "private family health matter" in the statement refers to Mickelson's announcement earlier this year that he would be stepping away from golf temporarily. The announcement came at the time of the Masters Championship more than two months ago.
Clare also said that the incident involving his client was "squarely contradicted by objective, video evidence."
