The Minnesota Vikings coaching staff is arguably the best in the NFL, if not one of the best. As a result, they are able to get the most out of players up and down the roster. In the NFL Draft, players taken on days one and two have defined roles, whereas players taken on days three seem to have fluidity regarding what they may be tasked with doing when they get on the NFL roster.
PFF took a chance at identifying some day-three fits for every NFL team, including the Vikings, and their takeaway was fitting them with a defensive lineman from the SEC.
J.J. Pegues is a defensive lineman from Ole Miss who also has some versatility playing fullback. Mason Cameron of PFF wrote up the reasoning for the fit as, "Versatility is Pegues’ calling card. He took snaps all over the defensive line, as well as in goal-line packages on offense, in college. The Ole Miss fan-favorite is a relentless, high-energy player, evidenced by his high-percentile grades as a run defender (87th) and pass rusher on true pass sets (84th). Given the creativity of Brian Flores and Kevin O'Connell, there’s no better landing spot to make full use of Pegues' skill set."
The Vikings have been attached to various defensive linemen in mock drafts such as Derrick Harmon and Darius Alexander, but that was in round one. After free agency, the idea of them adding depth on day three of the draft makes more sense in the grand scheme of it all.
