THOMPSONVILLE — Carrying the favorite label in skiing doesn’t bring the same kind of comfort like it does in other sports.
It’s because other sports don’t come with the same kind of margin for error. The kind that comes with racing down a mountain of ice with sharp turns involved.
But, there are times when the Petoskey and Harbor Springs ski teams make that favorite label look easy.
While it was far from that Monday, Feb. 9 at Crystal Mountain in Thompsonville, both teams put on a comfortable display from the outside looking in to qualify teams and individuals for the Division 2 state championships.
Petoskey’s boys qualified as a team with a regional championship, while Harbor Springs will send both squads to the state finals, with the girls riding a now four straight Division 2 regional title streak.
A prime example of anything can happen on the hill, Harbor’s girls – also the defending D2 state champs – have had their troubles stringing solid runs together one after another, though Monday it all came together.
“Our girls team especially, they’re so good under extreme pressure,” Harbor coach Ellen Beatty said. “They’re like, ‘Oh, you need us to go perform? Sure.’ This is the first time that they’ve strung together, all four runs. They’ve been falling all season.”
When the pressure was on after a tight morning, with the Ram girls trailing Great North Alpine in a 42-48 score, Harbor laid down an impressive afternoon in giant slalom and earned an 83-95 finish over GNA.
“They did it,” Beatty said. “They were steady and strong and they can hold that title.”
Norway also advanced to the finals on the girls side with 130 points, while Petoskey came up just short in fourth with 169.
The top three teams advance to the state finals from the regional race. The top 10 individuals in each event, or the top four individuals not on a qualifying team, whichever number is greater, also advance to the state finals.

On the boys side, Petoskey earned an impressive gap between the next competitor, finishing with a 43-78 title over GNA. Harbor Springs also qualified with 92 points.
Petoskey coach Tony Blancato wasn’t just happy that his team won, but thrilled they did it the right way.
“The way they did it, carrying themselves with good sportsmanship, being a good human, that’s what we’re after,” Blancato said. “They accomplished that and I couldn’t be happier. It was a lot of fun. We had some great finishes, that’s for sure.”
Both Petoskey and Harbor Springs had a skier claim an individual regional title, as Taylor Keiswetter won a dominant PHS boys giant slalom race in a time of 41.78 seconds. His brother, Chris, was also second in 42.15.
Taylor Keiswetter also led on the slalom side with a third place finish in 51..45, just behind Harbor Springs’ Caiden Phillips’ second place 51.23. Phillips also led for the Harbor Springs boys in GS with a seventh place time of 42.96.
For Beatty, it was all about team on the boys side, not trying to over ski, but rather meet what they needed to get to send the team through.
“They all just skied so well today,” she said. “They did what they needed to do. They were all team players and they skied for each other, rather than themselves.”
Harbor’s girls also had sophomore Keeler Brainerd shine on the day, as she claimed a GS victory in 39.60, along with a third place finish in slalom in 54.51. Quinn Myers also placed seventh in GS.
“(Keeler) skied really well. She sets the tone,” Beatty added. “She’s so focused.”
Though Petoskey’s girls won’t head to state’s as a team, freshman Audrey Bozzio will make her way to the finals with two top 10 finishes again, placing second in GS (39.71) and sixth in slalom (55.49).

While both coaches had racers near the top and win, both really saw it as a team day. Beatty was proud of her fifth and sixth skiers for pushing down the pack and, in turn, bumping up the team, while Blancato had a lineup that dealt with sickness and took some impressive leaps, like freshman Cole Whitener’s fourth place finish in slalom.
“He started last in the slalom,” Blancato said. “He started 65th in the second run and for him, a truly amazing accomplishment. We’ve just got some amazing young people.”

Along with Bozzio’s qualification into the finals, the area will also send Matthew Cesario of Petoskey St. Michael, who placed ninth in slalom (54.27) and Gaylord’s Rayna Robel placed fourth in slalom (54.77) to qualify.
The Division 2 state championship race will take place on Monday, Feb. 23 at Schuss Mountain in Bellaire. Both Petoskey and Harbor Springs will have a league match to race before the finals come.
