Taylor Lovell is on top, at last.
Lovell, a Gilbert Perry High alum who is now a junior at BYU, won the women's title in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon, on June 13, running 9:21.03. It is the first national title for Lovell, who had finished in ninth place in the past two seasons.
Lovell adds to the rich history and legacy of the steeplechase at BYU, which has now produced 10 individual national champions in the event across the women's and men's programs. The former women's NCAA record holder was a BYU athlete.
"I'm so proud," Lovell said in the mixed zone following the race. "I have so many women before me and with me that I get to do this with, I'm so grateful I get to keep doing this, continue that legacy."
At Perry, Lovell was a member of The Republic's All-Arizona cross-country team of the year in 2019. She won the 2022 Arizona Interscholastic Association Division I state title in the 3,200 meters, coming from behind. She had bests of 2:13.01 in the 800, 5:04.00 in the 1,600 and 10:53.66 in the 3,200 in high school. Lovell helped Perry win the team title in 2022, the first and only state title in school history.
The title for Lovell marks the second national title won by an Arizona high school alum in a 24-hour span after Gilbert's Vance Nilsson won the men's 400-meter hurdles on June 12.
