While Penn State's men's hockey team still has one final weekend of regular-season play to get through before heading into the Big Ten hockey tournament, the Penn State women's hockey team is one step closer to capturing a conference title of its own. On Saturday, the Penn State women's hockey team completed a two-game sweep of Syracuse top advance to the AHA Tournament Championship Game next weekend.
Captain and Olympic gold medalist Tessa Janecke scored a hat trick in Penn State's Game 1 victory over Syracuse and opened the scoring for the Nittany Lions on Saturday in the first period. Abby Stonehouse scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the second period, and the defense held the one-goal advantage for the remainder of the contest.
Penn State will host Mercyhurst on Saturday, March 7 for the AHA Tournament Championship. The puck is scheduled to drop at 2:00 p.m. in the Pegula Ice Arena. The winner of the AHA championship game will win an automatic berth in this year's NCAA women's ice hockey tournament.
Penn State is ranked No. 3 in the latest USCHO Division I Women's Poll and is one of the four Big Ten schools represented in the top four. No. 1 Wisconsin, No. 2 Ohio State, and No. 4 Minnesota all compete in the WCHA. The Big Ten does not sponsor a women's ice hockey conference because not enough Big Ten schools support the sport. Penn State was 0-2 against Ohio State during a regular-season non-conference matchup earlier this season.
Penn State will be the host school for this year's NCAA women's ice hockey tournament, and Penn State stands a decent chance of getting to be among the women's Frozen Four playing on home ice. Selections for the NCAA tournament will be announced on Sunday, March 8.
