The Penn State men's basketball season is, with mercy, over. The Nittany Lions were eliminated from the Big Ten men's basketball tournament on Tuesday night with a first-round loss to Northwestern. Penn State's 76-66 loss to the Wildcats in Chicago brings an unceremonious end to the 2025-26 season and sends the Nittany Lions into another pivotal offseason.
Ivan Jurić scored a career-best 22 points in the game with six rebounds and three assists to help give Penn State a chance to advance to the second round of the Big Ten tournament. Freddie Dilione V and Josh Reed each scored 14 points in the game, and freshman star Kayden Mingo ended the night with 13 points and five assists. Penn State trailed by just two points at halftime but could not keep up the pace with the Wildcats in the second half and trailed by as many as 13 points in the second half.
Penn State had 17 turnovers in the game while only forcing 8 Northwestern turnovers. The Nittany Lions were also out-rebounded by the Wildcats, 28-22. Northwestern had 9 steals in the game as Penn State was unable to protect the rock.
Northwestern's Nick Martinelli led all players with 24 points and he pulled down nine rebounds in the win for the Wildcats. Northwestern will now advance to the second round on Wednesday to face the No. 10-seeded Indiana.
Penn State now enters the offseason and will once again face some tough questions about the future of the program. Head coach Mike Rhoades will face some pressure to keep his roster together as much as possible. In the era of the transfer portal, that is more challenging than ever, especially for a program that has sputtered as much as Penn State has overall. Mingo will be the big name on the roster to watch after a solid freshman season.
There will be a lot to figure out for Penn State basketball moving forward. Penn State has made just one NCAA Tournament since 2012 (they likely would have made the 2020 tournament before the NCAA called it off).
